Law 3. The Law of Karma

Dear Students and Friends,

This week is my birthday and I turn 43 on Wednesday. I remember when I first began studying yoga in February of 1997 I was 27 and living in what I remember during the winter we called the frozen tundra or woods of Dingman’s Ferry Pennsylvania where I owned my first home. I was a young mother who had fallen ill during an important time as I was only married 3 years, we had an active 2 yr old son, I had a full time demanding career in health care administration and I was the caretaker to an ailing parent whom lived with me. I had very little time to myself, let alone time to fall sick. The Doctors could not find out why I was passing out and fainting all over, or why I was so weak. I would wake up on the bathroom floor with no idea just blacking out, it was very scary for me. My blood cells were not reproducing fast enough and so a lot of traveling around the country to different Doctors and hospitals and testing and stress evolved during that time. Turns out in the end that I had a not so common blood disorder VonWillebrands disease and also Sojourns syndrome. On top of that I was having incredible joint pain later found to be arthritis at age 27. The Doctors told me I would be in a wheel chair with 7 years if I did not get out of the cold climate. My marriage and my family was torn by all of the news and 3 years later we moved to sunny Florida where more change and lose occurred.
In in time I came to understand God’s will for my life and for others in my circle.

Today I don’t have a wheelchair and recently found out from my hematologist that my VonWillebrands diagnosis no longer shows any evidence of being in my system which I am still puzzled about. I don’t suffer very much from the arthritis as long as I am practicing my yoga and well as you know I went on to become a Sports Yoga teacher. I later moved around the State a little and then to the Island in Key West with my next spouse Ira and now today spend my time up and down the East Coast of Florida where I practice yoga along the way.

I shared all of that to say this that there are many decisions we make and things that we try in life some people and situations stick with us, others change. I have had a lot of the “change” on my end and not so much of the “sticking” but I am really happy to say that sixteen years later this yoga is the one constant in my life, it stuck. More importantly I want to say that it’s no longer a hobby, it’s more a way of life and for that I am eternally grateful as I do believe it saved me.

As we continue our study of The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga we come to probably the most important Law Karma.
Karma as studied in the Bhagavad Gita translation tells us for every action there is a reaction.
Nothing happens by chance.
You have heard “You shall reap what you sow.”
“Do unto others what you want done to you.”
So I asked my spouse his take on Karma last night and he said “Yes I do believe in Karma but I also believe in Redemption”, and yes the Gita speaks of redemption.

You see Karma is a great teacher because it helps to balance the world. Redemption leads to freedom.
Only God can save you by doing repentance God will interfere.
You should live a life where you are trying to please God and others and not so much of yourself.
Find out your purpose, “Why am I here?”, you need to know this answer, even if you are saying that you are not sure you want to know, you really do need to know.
Your purpose is to serve others. Once you realize your purpose God will bestow his many gifts upon your life beyond your greatest dreams or imagination.
If you’ve been hurting inside or if you have hurt others that could very well be Karma. The good news is with realizing your purpose and repentance and taking responsibility to making it right with those that you have wronged God will acknowledge that and loving Karma will prevail.
It all starts with a tiny grain of Faith.
In the end you can only answer for what you have done with the talents he has bestowed upon you.
Everyday I pray for the people on my mind and in my heart and everyday I wake up and do the right things, that is action and the reaction will hopefully be my soul closer to spiritual enlightenment. For those students that say they are not sure who they are and not sure if they really wanted to know after learning things from their past, I challenge you to learn about Karma and more than that for your own healing isn’t it time you get real with your past transgressions and I promise you when you do it will all make sense.

I attached a great interview with Pundit Venkat Machiraju he talks about what Karma is and the types and about how to live based on Hinduism and Gita teachings. As you know I study all religions. I was raised a Catholic and later converted to being a Baptist the same year I started yoga 1997. It was after that during deeper studies in my quest to learn more about yoga that I decided I want to learn and be open to all religions. So I guess you can say I was baptized a Catholic and I guess that is how I found my way through the large wooden doors with the beautiful stained glass windows of Catholic church on Christmas Eve in Key West a year ago and this Christmas Eve I was here in Port Orange where I drove up to a local Baptist church. My spouse is Jewish I have been to Synagogue as well and I celebrate Hanukkah and Christmas in my home. I guess if you have to classify me I am simply a Christian who desire to learn more and to accept all beliefs. By doing this I open myself up to being non denominational and that allows me to marry all religions and as in my nature as a Notary also to be neutral and not opinionated either way.
