This year I told you we will be starting out with a study in the Seven Spiritual Laws Of Yoga by Deepak Chopra M.D. and David Simon M.D.
There are teachers that the Chopra Institute has spread throughout the world that are trained instructors on these principles. I have studied these principles for about 3 years and felt compelled to study them further and to share with you. I would first like to start this study with a prayer.
Om Saha Naavatu, Shah
Asato maa Sad Gamaya
Tamaso Maa Jyotir
Om Shanti Shanti Shanti
Om,may the Lord protect us both (guru and disciple), may he cause us to enjoy (the supreme). may we exert together. May our studies be through and faithful (to become brilliant). May we never quarrel/hate each other. Oh Lord, lead me from untruth to truth, from darkness to light, from death to immortality. Peace Peace Peace.
I dedicate this prayer to all whom need it and to those that don’t even realize that they do.
There are many types of people that we co-exist with. The believers, the chosen ones of all faiths whether Christian or non Christian, Islamic, Hindu, all beliefs we still gather as one big circle of faith.
There is a sad situation weighing on our hearts today as my friend and his family living an ocean apart from us and they are living in a war zone in Egypt. They are stuck in their apartment with barely enough food and water and can’t leave their home to get anything as the banks and stores are closed. They have 2 families living together and a baby and it is very sad. There are Army tanks outside ready to launch at rioting people and tear gas being shot off that they have to breathe in through the windows. They are terrified if they will make it from one day through the next. They were so happy to Skype to hear my husband’s voice and our friend just said please check on me tomorrow and daily to see if I am still here. So for Ahmed and family we pray and light candles ongoing and when he hears Ira’s voice he hears hope.
Law 1 -Pure Potentiality
At the core of your being you are pure awareness. Pure Potentiality opens up avenues to using your full “potential” in life. Practicing allows you to become your “true self”. The opposite of being true to yourself is when you are being influenced by what is happening outside involving situations, people often loved ones and things. This is called “objective-referral” or “being fake” as I like to put it boldly. When your in “object-referral” a.k.a. “fake mode” your thoughts and actions are in anticipation of a response and your ego takes over usually out of fear. We all probably know someone whom puts on what I refer to as a “plastic face”, you know that person with the lifeless expression one moment then in character the next, the one you can see through no matter how animated they try to become. You may have someone you know who pretends for example to be a Christian and loves to announce his/her involvement with the Church and beliefs. This is the same person whom says “I am praying for you” or worse yet they send that to you out of the blue like in an email or a text for no apparent reason. Later you find out that they are involved in serious wrong doings or that their significant other is and when the truth is exposed and they are approached you are saddened more to find out in time that they are covering for them and you just have to shake your head, come on, we all know someone like that unfortunately. I know I do. They are the type of Ego driven plastic face we are talking about here they are “untrue” to themselves and others around them this is how they survive as he/she seeks approval, attention and so they live with this disguise and they will do all they can to keep up appearance. We all put on different social faces I’m not talking about that but at the end of the day when you turn out the lights do you have to ask yourself who you are or are you real within yourself?I know when my head hits the pillow I am being true to myself and those all around me so just remember that we must pray for those lost in such a sad existence and tell them there is help they need to know that we all fall but we can get back up again and make things right where it has gone wrong.
Yoga teaches us to be silent-to get inside our heads. The more we silence our minds the further we go.
We must go deeper.
Let us remember to :
Cultivate stillness in our body and mind during practice
After class meditate inward to quiet the mind more
Learn to separate stillness from motions going on on the outside
Acknowledge whom you are, do you like the face in the mirror staring back at you? Be true to yourself!
Spend time with nature and the beauty that surrounds you
Practice going easy on yourself and others don’t judge, don’t be harsh
Mantra to work on:
“Om Bhavam Namah” I am absolute existence
This months take away lesson and challenge:
If you have strayed from your true self the great news is that it is never too late to get real about it and being able to live authentically. Why would you lie to yourself? When it’s just you in the mirror you only have to start being true there, baby steps.
Do you even know who you are? More baby steps.
Are you being true to yourself and to others? Have you hurt someone by not being authentic? Did you even realize your actions or lack of action in these moments?
Be silent, go deeper.
Get inside of yourself and there you’ll find the answer.
